Jacqueline always felt out of place in her husband’s family. They acted like she wasn’t good enough for Tom, and her brother-in-law, Jack, was the meanest one.

At every family event, her mother-in-law, Jack, and the others would make snide remarks that really hurt her feelings. They just didn’t think Jacqueline was the right match for Tom, who they saw as someone with big dreams.

The worst of all was that Tom was never supportive of Jacqueline.

He always stood up for his family, claiming they were just joking around and that she was overreacting.

As time went on, this woman felt her self-esteem slipping away. She tried hard to prove her value, but nothing seemed to work out. It felt like her husband’s family took pleasure in putting her down and embarrassing her whenever they could.

Jacqueline, a talented cake decorator, wanted to fit in and thought her baking skills would help. For every family gathering, she made delicious cakes and cookies, but her mother-in-law, Alice, and Jack still found ways to make hurtful remarks.

Her work became Jacqueline’s sanctuary. The only thing that brought joy.

One day, while she was working in the kitchen, Jacqueline got a text from her brother-in-law. He asked her to make a cake for his birthday. This request caught her off guard because Jake never asked her for anything before. In fact, he often joked about her cakes, saying she could improve them. However, she thought maybe this was a sign that things were changing between them, and that he was trying to reach out.

On the day Jacqueline thought was Jack’s birthday, she decided to bring the cake to his house herself. The cake was three layers tall, covered in soft blue and silver buttercream, and decorated with pretty hand-painted fondant flowers.

What Jacqueline didn’t realize when she arrived at Jack’s house was that this day would turn out to be a life-changing moment for her.

It turned out that it wasn’t Jack’s birthday at all, and there wasn’t any birthday party happening.

A huge banner with the words “Bon Voyage” written in glitter, gold and white was in the middle of the room.

Tom was having a farewell party because he was relocating to Europe with his girlfriend. Pictures of him and the other woman decorated the room. Everyone in the family knew about his affair and his choice to leave Jacqueline, and they were excited to celebrate it.

Even though Jacqueline felt like her heart was shattered and her whole life was falling apart, she managed to keep her emotions in check. She refused to let her brother-in-law and Tom’s family make her feel embarrassed any longer.

Instead of yelling and crying, she placed the perfectly-made cake on the kitchen counter and started cutting it into perfect slices. She handed the first to Tom, her husband of many years who never stood by her side but let his family mock her. The second one to his mistress, saying, “And for you, a taste of what it takes to maintain what you’ve stolen.”

She handed the last piece to her brother-in-law.

“I really appreciate the invite to this amazing event, but I’ve dealt with too many people who only notice me when it’s convenient for them,” she said to him.

After that, she walked away, and for the first time in a long time, she felt at peace. She realized she didn’t have to work so hard to get Tom’s family to like her. Thankfully, she knew this was a good thing and that she could begin a new chapter in her life.

In the following days, Jacqueline found out that Tom’s girlfriend was boasting about relocating to Europe with him. Somehow, his boss caught wind of this and realized that Tom had been dishonest about the “family reasons” he gave for wanting to move. As a result, his job was terminated. Without a job, his girlfriend quickly ditched him without a second thought.

Suddenly, Tom felt a wave of regret for choosing to divorce Jacqueline. He showed up at her apartment, saying sorry for how he and his family had treated her. But by then, it was too late.

Jacqueline had her freedom. She was staring her life over, unburdened and unbroken.
